Why do we have to pay tax on our salaries

Explain it like I'm 16

We pay tax on our salaries because the government uses that money to fund public services and shared facilities, such as schools, hospitals, roads, rubbish collection and emergency services. Tax also helps support people who are unemployed, ill or unable to work.

A real-world example

If you earn £2,000 before tax, some of it may go to the government. That money helps pay for the NHS, maintain roads and fund local services you and other people rely on.

Why this matters

Taxes pay for essential services and help share their cost fairly across society.
