Why do we have seasons?
Explain it like I'm 16
Earth’s tilted axis causes the seasons. As Earth travels around the Sun, different hemispheres receive more direct sunlight and longer days at different times of year.
A real-world example
In June, Britain has long days while Australia has shorter winter days. Both are on the same planet at the same distance from the Sun, but their hemispheres face the sunlight differently.

Common misunderstanding
Summer is not mainly caused by Earth being closer to the Sun. That would not explain opposite seasons in the two hemispheres.
